Quality & Inspection Lab
Independent verification — every test passed before delivery
Trust, but verify
Every boat that leaves our workshop carries the certification that it has passed a defined set of quality inspections and material tests. Our Quality & Inspection Lab is an independent function within the organisation — it reports directly to the managing director, not to production — ensuring that no commercial pressure can compromise the inspection gate. If a material batch or a completed boat does not meet the published specification, the lab has the authority to halt shipment until the non-conformance is resolved.
The lab operates under a quality management system aligned with principles, and our test methods are based on ISO, ASTM, and EN standards wherever applicable. We maintain detailed records of every test performed, creating a complete traceability chain from raw material receipt to final boat delivery.
Test equipment and capabilities
| Equipment | Tests Performed | Standard / Method |
|---|---|---|
| Universal testing machine (50 kN) | Tensile strength (fabric), peel resistance (seams), tear propagation | , ISO 4674 |
| Air-retention test rig (programmable) | 1000-cycle inflation/deflation endurance, 30 min pressure-hold test | (internal) |
| Seam-peel jig (motorised 180° peel) | Weld and glued-seam peel strength at 100 mm/min | / ASTM D1876 |
| Hydrostatic head tester | Water penetration resistance of fabric (0u2013100 mbar) | ISO 811 |
| Digital thickness gauge & micrometre | Fabric thickness, tube wall thickness, adhesive-film thickness | ISO 2286-3 |
| Environmental chamber | Temperature conditioning (-40 °C to +80 °C) for cold-crack and heat-ageing tests | ISO 188, ISO 4675 |
| Colour spectrophotometer | Delta-E colour measurement after UV exposure | ISO 105-A05 / ASTM D2244 |
The inspection gates — from material to delivery
Every boat follows a defined quality plan with mandatory inspection points. No boat can skip a gate; each gate must be signed off by a quality inspector before the next production stage begins.
Incoming material inspection
Fabric batch, adhesive batch, hardware — all checked against incoming specification before release to production.
In-process weld inspection
First-off weld coupon tested (peel + visual) at start of each production shift.
Chamber air test
Each chamber pressurised to 1.5 x working pressure, held 30 min. Data logged per serial number.
Pre-delivery inspection
Complete boat inspected: all fasteners torqued, systems functional, no cosmetic defects. 100-point checklist.
Final certification
Test reports compiled, inspection records reviewed, Certificate of Conformance issued.
Key quality metrics (2025 rolling average)
Our quality team
The lab is staffed by a quality manager (10 years in marine QA, ASQ Certified Quality Engineer), two quality inspectors (each with Level 2 NDT certification in visual testing), and a materials technician responsible for all physical testing. The team undergoes annual proficiency testing through an independent third-party provider to ensure that our test results remain accurate and reproducible.
Independent testing for clients
Our Quality & Inspection Lab is available for independent testing services. If you need to verify a fabric specification, validate a new adhesive system, or obtain a third-party test report for a procurement qualification, we can perform the tests to the applicable standard and issue a certified test report.
Examples of recent third-party testing work:
- Peel-strength comparison of five competitive adhesive film products for a European military procurement programme.
- Accelerated ageing study (UV + thermal cycling) for a new orange-pigmented PVC formulation, with regular interim measurements at 500 h intervals.
- Air-retention validation of 50 prototype baffle valves for a new high-pressure tube design.
Our commitment to you
When you receive a Aquafarer boat, you also receive its quality dossier — a compiled record of the test results that apply to your specific boat. Fabric batch certificate, weld peel tests, chamber air-test logs, and pre-delivery inspection checklist. Every number is traceable. Every inspector is identified. This is not just paperwork — it is our promise that what we delivered is what we specified.
If you ever have a quality concern, you can contact the lab directly — the contact details are printed on your certificate of conformance. We take every query seriously and commit to a formal investigation within 48 hours.
